I've been a college professor for 20 years, and I'm seeing more Gen X and Baby Boomer students. I no longer lecture to the class and instead let the older students take the lead. An increasing number of college students aren't kids anymore; they're older — many of whom are my generational peers. It's changed the way students learn and the way I teach. I quickly realized they learn differentlyI've noticed that older learners engage in ways that are different from traditional college students.

Driven largely by benefits associated with the “Barbie” movie, Mattel finished last year strong with 24% fourth-quarter growth. Before the “Barbie” movie was released, the Barbie brand already had a 99% rate of global brand awareness, selling more than 100 dolls every single minute, according to Mattel. What’s next for Mattel Films? Mattel Films, which is headed by Oscar-nominated producer Robbie Brenner, faces a lot of pressure to live up to “Barbie” with its second go-around. When asked about the possibility of an R-rated film at Mattel, Kreiz says, “I wouldn’t rule out different scenarios.

Prime Video's "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" series stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. Thankfully, Prime Video's "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" TV series stands apart from the usual pitfalls of nostalgia bait and familiarity. While neither Pitt or Jolie appear in the Amazon TV show alongside Glover and Erskine, the opening episode finds a metaphorical way of saying goodbye to the "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" movie. AdvertisementSo while audiences will already be familiar with the idea of married spies, the "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" series feels fresh enough to stand on its own two feet. "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" is streaming now on Prime Video.

If the key driver of reboots is nostalgia — then the key driver of nostalgia is loneliness. Next, participants took Batcho's Nostalgia Inventory, a psychological test developed by Krystine Batcho in 1995 to quantify how deeply people feel nostalgia at a given time. If the key driver of reboots is nostalgia — then the key driver of nostalgia is loneliness. American health insurer Cigna has conducted a large loneliness survey since 2018, with over ten thousand respondents in the sample annually. In 2020, 61% of those surveyed were lonely, up 7 percentage points since the survey was first conducted in 2018.

Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio was removed as GOP nominee for speaker in a secret ballot after he lost his third bid on Friday. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the previous speaker, was ousted more than two weeks ago. Jim Jordan withdrew his bid to become House speaker after the fiery conservative lost both a public and private vote Friday, sending divided House Republicans back to the starting line in their weekslong quest to elect a leader and pass urgent legislation. Jordan’s defeat marked the latest fallout from the ouster earlier this month of Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.), with House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R., La.) and now Jordan winning the party’s nod only to fall short of the gavel because of internal GOP opposition.

Not all analysts on Wall Street are convinced Tesla 's in-house computer technology is enough to push shares higher. The analyst did not provide a forecast price target and said he now expects flat year-over-year automotive sales gross margin in 2024, minus vehicle credits and incentives. What underpinned the Morgan Stanley upgrade on Tesla was optimism toward the company's effort with Dojo, an in-house supercomputer that is meant to train autonomous driving software. Tesla has been on a price-cutting spree for much of 2023, with markdowns to both the Model 3 and Model Y . While the analyst remains "sympathetic" over the long term on Tesla, he said, "We think that there is too much near-term uncertainty post its repeated price cuts."

CNN —An asteroid sample stowed inside a NASA spacecraft is about to reach Earth after traveling for nearly 2½ years across space. It’s NASA’s first time collecting and returning an asteroid sample from space. Teams have been rehearsing how to retrieve the sample, originally collected from the near-Earth asteroid Bennu, when it drops down into the Utah desert on September 24. Keegan Barber/NASAThe mission’s original goal was to retrieve a pristine asteroid sample. The team has also prepared for different landing scenarios, such as a hard landing where the capsule containing the sample opens unexpectedly.

Google is shaking up its annual employee survey. Google will start soliciting feedback from staff on a weekly basis as it reboots the company's internal survey. The "Googlegeist" survey, which was distributed annually, has long served as a way for staff to anonymously share how they feel about leadership, compensation, and their teams. The Googlegeist reboot comes amid a culture shift at the company, following January's layoffs and a sharpened focus on artificial intelligence. Are you a current or former Google employee with something to share?

The candidate needs to lock down savvy people he trusts and will listen to, even as he jettisons the troublemakers. When Mr. McCain cut loose a couple of his top advisers in 2007, several senior staff members followed them out the door. This is when a candidate really needs to step up and impose order. The harsh reality of reboots is that some presidential hopefuls are just too out of step with the political moment to rescue. By the fall of 2015, Team Jeb was slashing staff and hoping for the debates to help him win free media.

The amount of derivative work makes you wonder if the demand for the new is in decline. Ever since Penn and Teller burst on the scene, every magician seemed to be deconstructing illusions while doing them. But this peek behind the curtain is something new, while, as its title suggests, not being original at all. We only hear Hnath, on a recording played by Cuiffo, the sole one onstage. Hnath asks Cuiffo to show him a trick, and after he does, multiple times, artistic tension between collaborators emerges.

REUTERS/Oren AlonJERUSALEM, June 25 (Reuters) - Israeli lawmakers on Sunday began debating a bill that would limit the Supreme Court's powers, rebooting a fiercely opposed judicial overhaul instigated by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's religious-nationalist coalition. Anti-government demonstrations had prompted Netanyahu to suspend his judicial drive in March to allow compromise talks with opposition parties. The proposed judicial overhaul has also stirred Western concern over Israel's democratic health and spooked investors. Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros.” movie and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” both animated films, have racked up big ticket sales this year. The successes of "Super Mario Bros." and "Spider-Man" also reflect a new post-COVID-19 trend at box offices, Hollywood insiders say. In his book, “Creativity, Inc.,” Pixar co-founder Ed Catmull credited Pixar's brain trust with the studio’s early box-office triumphs. Catmull and other members of the original brain trust are gone, though Docter remains, now in the role of chief creative officer. Opinion | Can the Writers’ Strike Fix Hollywood?
  + stars: | 2023-05-20 | by ( Ross Douthat | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
A somewhat more pessimistic analysis, offered by writers like Sonny Bunch and Jessa Crispin, emphasizes that the superhero-sweatshop corporate strategy evolved because it’s giving audiences what they want. And so even if the strike is an opportunity for reconsiderations, it’s probably not a lever that can change the system as a whole. Personally I would like to see the strike lever a different Hollywood system into being. (HBO’s “Westworld,” for instance, or lately Showtime’s “Yellowjackets.”) Sometimes they play like thin imitations of the previous decade’s antihero dramas. Or they take on the character of the theatrical experience but somewhat worse — with too-big-to-fail franchises that nobody really enjoys.
Fox Corp. , Disney , Warner Bros. Media executives' messaging to advertisers could center around value this year, particularly as companies continue to offer more content on their streaming services. Cost cuttingWhile media executives will try to convince advertisers to maximize their spending, they'll be pushing that narrative while making fewer shows. The logo of the streaming service Paramount+ on a logo wall at the Paramount+ launch event. Jörg Carstensen | Picture Alliance | Getty ImagesParamount, in particular, has seen a big reliance on franchises, especially for its Paramount+ streaming service.
While Hollywood deals with the first TV and movie writers’ strike in 15 years, the wealth of content that we have available to us is a good reminder of the creativity those writers have put into making the shows and movies we love. Something to sip on…Corey Mylchreest as Young King George, India Amarteifio as Young Queen Charlotte in episode 101 of "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story." Liam Daniel/NetflixOne of the reasons the strike is even happening is because streaming has changed the entertainment industry so much that writers say their wages are being adversely affected through shorter seasons and changing distribution models. Those individuals can’t work – and some of our favorite shows will be delayed – unless writers and studios reach a new agreement soon. In the meantime, catch up on some brilliant shows you’ve missed.
PGA Tour Reboots Website as Golf Seeks Wider Fan Base

The PGA Tour is revamping its digital properties as it works to attract a broader group of fans to golf. The changes come as professional sports strive to draw younger fans who are showing less interest than older generations. The PGA Tour, a membership association for touring professional golfers that co-sanctions tournaments, is familiar with the dynamic. Bite-sized contentThe PGA Tour released a new app in November. “Golf is not a short game,” said Derek Fridman, a design partner at digital agency Work & Co, which worked with the PGA Tour on its digital reboot.
However, thanks to a recent plunge in European natural gas prices - down 60% since December 1 on mild winter temperatures, filled storage tanks and diminished industrial use - European coal prices and demand have slumped so far in 2023. WIDE SPREADThe divergent tones of Europe's and Asia's coal markets are captured by the record-wide price spread between them. This week, that spread surpassed $200 a tonne as Asia-focused Newcastle coal prices held firm around $370 a tonne while European coal prices slumped to $165. Over the near term, such actions will likely narrow the arbitrage window by applying pressure to Asia's coal prices. Those high stocks have in turn been a major driver behind the gas price falls seen since December.
LITTLETON, Colo., Jan 9 (Reuters) - Pollution levels from China's mammoth power sector are set to climb to new highs in 2023 as Beijing's efforts to spur growth across the economy result in increased burning of fossil fuels. The energy sector accounts for roughly 90% of emissions in the country, the world's top polluter, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). SOFT PATCHThe 1.6% rise in China's power sector emissions through November was the smallest increase during that period on record aside from 2020, when China first tackled COVID outbreaks, Ember data shows. China power sector emissionsA more than 10% rise in electricity generated from clean sources such as solar and wind - compared with a 1.5% rise in fossil fuel electricity generation - helped curb overall power sector emissions, according to the Ember data. Diminished energy demand from shuttered factories and several key industries also capped overall power sector pollution, with China's industrial output through most of 2022 holding at suppressed levels.
China coal use seasonallyBut recent measures aimed at lifting movement restrictions and reviving economic activity in China are already resulting in increased coal import activity at key usage hubs, which stand to impact global coal flows, prices and emissions in 2023. Between January and October, the province cut thermal coal use by 51 million tonnes from the same period in 2021. As a result, many Southern China coal plants are almost overwhelmingly reliant on imported coal. And all major coal ports in that region are now starting to show signs of a recovery in coal import volumes compared with mid-2022, when lockdowns were common throughout the country. And much of that increased coal demand will be fulfilled by imports, which will serve to tighten global coal markets, boost China's coal sector emissions, and potentially raise prices for other coal consumers.
[1/5] People take pictures of an an electric-powered Microlino 2.0 car of Swiss manufacturer Microlino AG in Zurich, Switzerland November 21, 2022. Oliver and Merlin Ouboter have launched a new version of the micro car, modelled on BMW's (BMWG.DE) Isetta bubble car, this time with four wheels, not three. "Because it's smaller than a conventional car it consumes less material to make it, and it has a smaller battery which means it uses less electricity," his brother Merlin added. "So the ecological footprint is about a third of a conventional electric car." Microlino is the latest example of that," said Daniel Geissmann at the Swiss Transport Museum in Lucerne.
CNN —In the age of reboots, revivals and prequels, Antonio Banderas is sharing thoughts on who would make a great choice to follow in his masked footsteps as the legendary Zorro. The actor, who played the swashbuckling hero in 1998’s “The Mask of Zorro” and sequel “The Legend of Zorro” in 2005, said his “Uncharted” costar Tom Holland would be a perfect fit for the role, in a video interview published Saturday with Comicbook.com. “He’s so energetic and fun,” Banderas said of Holland. “He’s got this spark, too.”The “Zorro” films, which were directed by Martin Campbell, costarred Catherine Zeta-Jones. While the “Zorro” franchise currently has no solid projects in development, Banderas is currently doing press for another sequel, the upcoming DreamWorks animated movie “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.”In that film, Banderas again voices the debonair feline character he originated in the “Shrek” movies, following 2011’s feature-length “Puss in Boots.”
CNN —A biologic therapy that delays the onset of type 1 diabetes received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration on Thursday. The most common side effects reported in the trial participants were low white blood cells and lymph cells, rash and headache. Without insulin, blood sugar can build up in the bloodstream and break down the body’s own fat and muscle. With Tzield, doctors would screen individual family members of people with type 1 diabetes to see whether they have those specific antibodies. As of 2019, about 1.9 million people have type 1 diabetes in the United States, according to the American Diabetes Association, including 244,000 children and adolescents.
